Introducing: Coach Insights 💪
Each month, we will meet with one of our awesome coaches to learn about their favourite progressions, daily coaching routine and a handy tip for gymnasts of all levels! This month we sat down with Coach Ruby, hear what she had to say below.
What is your favourite skill currently, Coach Ruby, and why?
My favourite skill is definitely the forwards roll! I love it because I teach tinies, and it’s usually one of the first ‘gymnastics’ skills kids learn, which means every week I get to see my students getting closer and closer. It brings a lot of joy to both kids and parents when they can finally do one!
Do you have a tip for someone struggling to perfect this skill?
A tip for someone struggling to get it perfect is to tuck that chin in! – give yourself a double chin 😂
Can you walk us through your daily routine as a coach?
My mornings start with me waking up nice and early on a Sunday morning then heading to the gym, where I set up tinies with Coach Brinley. We then do 4 classes, finishing off the day by re-arranging the gym back to badge and stars ready for the older kids.
What’s one healthy habit that helps you in the gym?
Drinking water !!! I never have been good at maintaining that habit but I always do at twisters.
What motivates you as a coach?
Seeing growth and progress – especially in the tinies, it’s not just in skills related to gymnastics but also in their ability to listen!
What’s your favourite snack to refuel after coaching?
My favourite snack to refuel is always either some chocolate or something salt and vinegar flavoured.
What do you love most about the twisters community?
I love that twisters are almost like a whole family thing! Each day you often have siblings in different classes, and the whole family will come to watch them both. It’s a nice little community, especially on Sundays.
What’s something funny or surprising that happened in the gym?
I could never forget the time a possum ran across the ceiling in zone 6/7
And last but certainly not least, what was your favourite movie growing up?
My favourite movie growing up was either the lion king or ratatouille!!
🌟 Core Value Coach Awards 🌟
Congratulations to the following coaches for being the August winners of the Core Value Coach Awards!
NORTHCOTE – Coach Hannah was awarded for the core value of ‘Fun And Energy is Contagious’. Hannah coaches in a manner in which the way she engages with the kids is positive and busy at all times, but she throws in genuine celebrations when they do something well, that brings the energy levels up of everyone around her!
SHOWGROUNDS – Coach Celia was awarded for the core value of ‘We Make Our Mates Better’. Whether Floor Leading or coaching, Celia is always looking out for her fellow coaches and helping others around the gym. She is great at applying her own coaching knowledge to mentor our Coaches in Training to help them grow. Her dedication to helping build a great learning environment is truly appreciated.
TORQUAY – Coach Erica was awarded for the core value of ‘Dedication to go Beyond’. For multiple weeks Erica has travelled from Torquay to our Northcote venue so that she could be the Team Leader on a Saturday whilst we had a person away and no one local to cover. Erica has also travelled up to Northcote multiple times to practice her spotting skills for the higher-level skills that we don’t see at Torquay. She is making sure she is educated enough to take Torquay kids as far as they want to go. Amazing dedication to go beyond!!

Northcote GoM | Sophie
Here is why Coach Ivy nominated Sophie…
I chose to nominate Sophie for gymnast of the month because she exemplifies the Twisters core values “we make our mates better” and “dedication to go beyond”. From her very first class with me Sophie’s compassion and kindness towards her peers was evident. Her friendliness and enthusiasm is infectious, Sophie’s lovely personality brightens up the gym and makes it so that every class is so fun! She has also put in a great effort in listening to and taking on corrections, as well as asking questions in order to improve her ninja skills.
